Speed cameras in France, in short
France has more than 3,300 fixed enforcement devices listed by Vigirota: speed cameras, average speed zones, red-light cameras and level-crossing cameras. They photograph the number plate, so a fine can be sent to the registered keeper of the car, even abroad.
Speed limits are in km/h and change often: 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on most two-way roads (90 km/h on some sections), 110 km/h on dual carriageways and 130 km/h on motorways, lower in the rain. Our guides explain the rules for visitors in plain English.
Radar detectors are banned in France, even for tourists. Driver-assistance apps such as Vigirota are allowed: they compare your GPS position with a database and detect nothing.
What Vigirota warns you about
The cameras on your road, and only those: the one on the side road along the motorway does not disturb you.
- Fixed speed cameras, with the limit at that spot
- Red-light and level-crossing cameras, early enough to slow down
- Average speed zones: the start of the section, then a reminder
- Areas to watch, roadworks, accidents and closed roads
The app currently speaks French: alerts, menus and voice guidance are in French. An English version is on its way.

Frequently asked questions
Is Vigirota a radar detector?
No. A detector picks up the waves sent by speed cameras, and these devices are banned in France. Vigirota picks up nothing and sends nothing: it compares your GPS position with known locations and reads them out.
Is Vigirota legal in France?
Yes. Driver-assistance apps that use GPS and a database are allowed in France. Radar detectors are not. See radar detectors and French law.
Is the app available in English?
Not yet. The app currently speaks French: alerts, menus and voice guidance are in French. An English version is on its way. The online map, Vigirota Maps (maps.vigirota.fr), can be used in any language.
What is Vigirota Maps?
Vigirota Maps (maps.vigirota.fr) is a free map, with no account, that shows fixed speed cameras, areas to watch, roadworks, accidents, closed roads and the weather in France, with route planning. Live traffic covers motorways and national roads.
Vigirota is a driving aid: it does not authorise anything or exempt you from anything. The speed limits shown are indicative; only the signs on the spot count. Holding a phone while driving is illegal in France: set your route while parked, then listen.
